昨日とは打つて變はつてうそ寒い日だつたので殆ど外出もせずにデスクワーク。遺された資料を前にして智慧を絞つて推理してゐたら一日があつと云ふ間に過ぎた。必死になつて集中したので腦味噌が萎んで仕舞つてもう何も考へられない。だから重たく難解な音樂はご勘辯を。

ヴァーノン・デュークこそ奇妙な經歴の人物だ。本名をヴラヂーミル・ドゥケリスキー Владимир Александрович Дукельский と云ひ、キエフ音樂院でグリエールに學んだ。露西亞革命後は亡命の道を選ぶが、巴里でヂアギレフに見出され二十一歳の若さで自作《ゼフュロスとフローラ》がバレエ・リュスの舞臺に掛かる榮譽に浴し、大物指揮者クーセヴィツキーは第一交響曲に賞讃を惜しまなかつた。同じくグリエール門下だつた先輩プロコフィエフとは昵懇の間柄で繁く文通を續けてゐる。

奇妙な經歴どころか實に目覺ましくも赫々たるキャリアと云ふべきだが、不可思議なのは其れから後のドゥケリスキーの身の振り方だ。
